the life around us

It isn't that there is no other intelligent life in the universe, the problem is crossing the boundaries that are imposed upon us.  Sensory awareness is our measure of the reality of a thing.  The popular conception is that if you cannot see it, touch it, hear it then it isn't there.
  That isn't a valid judgement.  You cannot see life, only the movements it engenders.  You cannot see air but you know immediately when it isn't there.  We have a great deal of difficulty understanding things devoid of sensory input.
